No, Not The Tea!

avoid bad tea

It has gotten frustrating lately as I just keep finding out more and more of the things we ingest are bad for us. Now I find out tea isn’t just tea.

Glaucus Research, an independent lab, did testing on Celestial Seasonings and found 91% of the tea leaves exceeded U.S. limits for pesticide residues. Their teas had residues of propachlor and propagate, known carcinogens. They have received several warnings from the FDA, but their Sleepytime Kids Goodnight Grape Herbal is still very dangerous.

Teavana, a high-end tea pushing the health benefits of tea, was tested and 100% of their tea contained pesticides. 64% of the teas contained endosultan, a pesticide banned in the US and 146 other countries because it is linked to impaired fertility and could harm unborn babies.

Shockingly, across many other major brands one finds both artificial and natural flavorings added to the teas. Knowing both of these flavor types are not good for you (we should be doing an article on ‘natural’ flavors later) all should be banned. Trader Joe’s, Teavanna, Lipton, Celestial Seasonings, Bigelow, Tazo ,Tea Forte and Twinings all had add flavors to some of their teas so should be avoided.

In addition, Lipton, Celestial Seasonings, Bigelow, Tea Forte and Mighty Leaf all use GMO ingredients in either their tea or tea bags.

In a sad summary, the best idea is to go with loose tea, staying away from paper or plastic bags due to their cancer-causing natures. Numi is one of the few teas that is pesticide free and non-GMO. Adagio Tea is also pesticide free. Having used them for years I contacted them and they assured me they only purchase from organic growers. That was one bit of holiday cheer. Just remember to buy smart so you can truly enjoy your tea during these cold months.
